What is Damascus Steel?

Damascus steel that we get today is a modern version of an ancient Syrian metal making technique – it’s all about pattern welding. The original method was used to produce knives and swords, but the process was lost at some point during the 1700s.

Later on, during the 19th century, blacksmiths attempted figure it out, using artefacts from this ancient Syrian period, and they came up with pattern welding. This is the process that is used today to produce modern Damascus steel.

Essentially, it involves layering different types of metal using heat retention methods until you have a big solid block of multi-layered metal. Because of the layering, the face of the blades boast a unique, wave-like pattern, and because of its complex composition, Damascus steel is incredibly strong, durable, non-corrosive, and unlikely to chip.
